Good quality bedding will last longer if it’s properly cared for. Below are some of our top tips for spring cleaning your bed:

Follow the care instructions

Look at the care label on your sheets or on the packaging to know what material your sheets are made of. Follow the instructions to prevent shrinking, pilling, or damaging the fabric. Sealy sheets are long-lasting a durable, made with 100% natural, breathable percale cotton. Percale cotton sheets and most other materials require cold or lukewarm water.

Linen sheets should be washed with a delicate cycle and warm water. Silk sheets are best washed with a delicate cycle and cold water.

Pre-treat stains

If your sheets have any stains on them, pre-treat them with a stain remover. You could also try using a home remedy like apple cider vinegar mixed with water or bicarb of soda.

Loading the washing machine
Don’t mix your bedding with other clothes, to ensure that zippers and fasteners don’t damage your bedding. Follow the recommended load size for your machine and be careful not to overload the machine to avoid the sheets from getting twisted and stretched. If the bedding is very dirty, rather wash in smaller loads.

Drying your bedding

To avoid wrinkles, remove the sheets from the washing machine as soon as the wash cycle is complete. If you’re using a tumble dryer, use low to medium heat. Avoid high heat because it might shrink your bedding. Again, remove the sheets as soon as the drying cycle is complete to avoid wrinkles. If wrinkles have already been set, add a damp towel to the machine and dry for a little longer.

However, with South Africa’s gorgeous weather, it’s better for the environment and your sheets to let them air-dry. Hang your bedding on a line preferably out of direct sunlight. Fold and store bedding as soon as it comes off the line.

Ironing bed linen

This extra step is debatable – however, experts do advise ironing your sheets because the heat helps to kill any remaining germs or bacteria. Use a low to medium heat setting.

Linen storage

There are multiple storage options for your bedding. Find an option that will help you keep your space tidy and save you time when you’re looking for specific bed linen. Here are some of our best options:

  • Put the folded sheets inside the matching pillowcase, along with the second pillowcase.
  • Store folded sheets in labeled storage boxes. Label boxes by bed size or bedroom.
  • Store linen in its dedicated bedroom.

The answer to this question varies depending on the season, who is sleeping in the bed their hygiene practices, and if any pets sleep in the bed. Naturally, we sweat more during summer than we do in winter. However, some people have naturally higher body temperatures and might sweat throughout the night regardless. It’s best to shower before bed, so your body is clean and your sheets stay fresher for longer.

Experts recommend washing your bedding every week. Consider having three sets of bedding per bed, so you can rotate the bedding regularly and help your sheets last longer. It’s gross but true, While you sleep your body releases dead skin cells and bodily oils and fluids. These particles put stress on the fibers of the bedding and will also attract dust mites. So, when deciding how frequently to wash your bedding, opt for more often than not.

You can protect your mattress from dust mites by using a mattress protector. This is an additional layer between your sheets and your mattress and can also be easily cleaned in the washing machine.
