How to feng shui your bedroom

What is feng shui?

Feng shui is the ancient Chinese practice of arranging objects. The essence of the feng shui principles is peace and prosperity, with the hope of finding the optimum way to design a room with those in mind. The idea is that a peaceful, balanced energy will make a room more harmonious and pleasant to spend time in. When it comes to the bedroom, that means making sure that your bedroom is equipped for a restful sleep and is full to the brim with positive energy.

What are the feng shui principles?

The feng shui principles are designed to bring peace and comfort to a room. Feng shui experts are trained to use the layout of the room to do this. If you want to work on your bedroom feng shui yourself, there are plenty of things that you can do.

The general rules of feng shui can be summed up in a few statements:

  • You should always make the space symmetrical.
  • Focus on natural light.
  • Light, neutral colours are best.
  • Anything that may pull you away from your well-needed rest should be kept elsewhere.

If you’re not sure how best to set up a feng shui bedroom, you can hire a feng shui consultant to help you with your interior decorating dreams. They might even be able to help you implement feng shui elsewhere in your home – you don’t have to stop at a feng shui bedroom!

Some good feng shui tips for your bedroom

Position your bed

The bed is the most important thing in your bedroom, and if it’s a super king bed it is usually the largest thing, too. One of the biggest feng shui hacks that a certified feng shui consultant will use on most rooms is to put the bed in a commanding position. Your bed placement makes the rest of the room, and putting it in the “wrong” place can suck the life force energy from the room.

You don’t want to put your bed directly in line with any doors, which is the main point that feng shui experts make. It is especially important to avoid pointing your feet toward a door in what is known as the ‘coffin’ position; this is seen as encouraging bad luck.

Invest in a headboard

A headboard one of the important factors of good feng shui in a bedroom. A solid headboard represents a stable life and good, sturdy relationships. Always position your headboard against a solid wall.

Unplug

Do you have a computer, TV or iPad in your bedroom? Well, for the sake of feng shui, it’s got to go. Electronic devices emit electric and magnetic fields and these can disturb your sleep. According to the feng shui principles, they can also impact your immune system.

Keep it neutral

Feng shui colours are neutral, earthy tones that do not stimulate the brain too much. Keeping your room neutral can help to promote relaxation and create harmony in your restful space.

Remove clutter from beneath the bed

A lot of us use the space beneath our bed as extra storage, and while there’s nothing wrong with that in the grand scheme of things, it can be harmful to bedroom feng shui. Feng shui experts believe that leaving clutter beneath the bed stops the qi, a life force, from being able to flow freely and keep us refreshed.

Of course, not everyone has the space to store all their things elsewhere. If that’s true for you, just be careful what’s under there. Suitcases, mementoes from ex-lovers or friends, and even shoes, are all bad feng shui practices, as they provide negative energy and make us feel as if we are never stopping, even when we’re trying to rest.

Remove books

According to feng shui, books give off an active energy, and since they’re often stored on tall furniture that has constrictive energy, it is best to keep them out of our bedrooms. A feng shui bedroom should not have anything in it that could hinder a restful night.

Keep the gym away

Just like our books, gym equipment gives off too much energy to have in a bedroom. You want to be able to relax and unwind in a feng shui bedroom. Storing your gym equipment elsewhere can really help to provide that relaxing vibe.

Try to be symmetrical

Creating symmetry in your room is a key element of feng shui. In a bedroom this could involve leaving equal space on either side of the bed, having matching bedside tables, or arranging pillows and throw cushions in a symmetrical pattern.
