First, ask yourself, “How will I use my bedroom?”
Start by identifying your bedroom needs – do you need a cosy spot to read? A place to meditate or enjoy your morning coffee? The various functions of your bedroom will play a crucial role in planning the room.
Next, consider functionality
Whether yours is a large or small space, functionality is key when selecting furniture for your bedroom. Depending on your needs, look for smart designs such as a bench or ottoman that offer both seating and additional storage. Nesting side tables are a great option for bedside tables as they offer more surface space when needed. If you’re introducing a TV to your room, opt for a piece that can be closed to hide the television when not in use. Also, ensure that there’s sufficient task and ambient lighting.
Then measure everything
Next, measure your space and get the measurements for the furniture pieces you want to add to the room. Draw a sketch and add in the various items, ensuring that no windows or doorways are being blocked.
And choose a focal point
When designing the layout of your bedroom, determining a focal point is critical. Remember, this is the main focus around which your other furniture will be arranged – it can be a beautiful bed, a picture window or, if you’re lucky enough, a beautiful fireplace.
“Based on your measurements and focal point, put your ideas to paper,” says Ashley Furniture. “Keep in mind the traffic flow and make sure your design allows people to move easily into and out of the room without encountering barriers or extremely tight spaces. On your sketch, highlight the most direct path from entry to exit and place furniture so there are no obstacles in that path. Brainstorm alternative plans to have a variety of options. If there’s a doorway along a wall, group furniture opposite of that wall. If faced with two doors across from each other, the room can be divided into two separate areas. If there are several doorways, the room can be broken up into separate areas, each with its own function.”
“Once you’ve determined your living room floor plan, it’s time to decide what furniture to use. You may choose to just reshuffle what you have, incorporate new items, or start from scratch with all new furniture.”
