I’m writing about the healing power of nature in Wildflower magazine

March 24, 2023

The new issue of Wildflower explores the therapeutic power of nature, a timely topic post-pandemic. I’m happy to say I contributed two articles to the issue.

The first is “Nature Therapy Is Child’s Play,” which starts on page 24. I looked into studies showing that nature play is essential to kids’ mental and physical health, and I talked with experts about how gardens and natural spaces positively impact children and adolescents. Many young people are really struggling right now and need our help — and Mother Nature’s — to feel better in our screen-focused world.

My other article, “Propagating Happiness” on page 42, is about a research study by Rosalie Kelley, a Wildflower Center program manager and U.S. Army veteran. While pursuing a master’s degree at Texas State, she devised a study with university students who were military veterans to see if caring for plants had a positive impact on the students’ mental health. Hint: it did!

You’ll find numerous other articles about the healing power of nature in the issue — but only if you’re a member of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, which gives you a subscription to the magazine.
