Your garden shed is an important building, especially if you do a lot of gardening, but unfortunately, lots of garden sheds are not very hardy.
Wooden sheds are prone to rotting, metal sheds can rust, and any shed that’s neglected can quickly get into a bit of a state.
There are a lot of things you can do to improve your shed so that it lasts longer, looks better, and is more enjoyable to use. Here are some easy ways to make your shed more attractive and fit for purpose.
1. Paint it
Painting your garden shed is a great way to enhance its appearance and at the same time help to protect it from the elements. It’s important to choose a high-quality outdoor paint if you want to get maximum benefit.
Instead of going for boring old brown, choosing a shade of lavender, rose, mint, or grey can make your shed look lovely and add impact in your garden.
2. Replace the roof
If your shed has a wooden roof, then it’s likely that it will have a shorter lifespan than a roof that is constructed from corrugated roofing sheets. These are much better at withstanding the elements than wood, and could last for 20 years or more with the right care.
It’s relatively easy to replace a shed roof, but even if you have to get a professional in to do it for you it will be worth it.
3. Install a solid base to improve your shed
If there is not a solid base under your shed, then it is more likely that standing water will cause it to rot from the ground up.
The best bases for sheds are solid bases that are filled with gravel, or plastic ones. Both of these will help to drain away water and prevent the surrounding soil from getting very wet and seeping into the wood.
4. Install a green roof
If you don’t like the idea of a metal roof, then why not create a green one instead?
Green roofs can be just as good because they will absorb water before it gets to the beams of the roof. And they can look amazing too. If you have a small garden, this can drastically increase the amount of plants and flowers you can grow.
5. Consider a pressure treatment
Pressure treatments can be used to coat your shed with water-resistant chemicals that will extend its life exponentially. They are not particularly expensive, especially when you consider how much more costly it would be to have to replace the shed every few years due to rot.
6. Install storage bins
Plastic storage bins will help you to keep your shed more organised, so it’s easier to get your gardening jobs done. They can also protect your tools from the elements, and allow you to make better use of the space.
