In January, my friend and I decided that ahead of our nine-day London trip that we would quarantine together the week before. It was actually kind of a snap decision — one of our other fellow travelers had just gotten COVID and had to cancel her trip (because back then the U.K. required a PCR before even getting on a plane and then a PCR after 48 hours after arriving). We didn’t risk want to risk our trip, so I packed my suitcase a week early, along with a duffle bag of clothes for the week before, and headed down to her Brooklyn apartment.

Because we live in small spaces, she didn’t have an extra guest room to sleep in — she only had this Novogratz Leyla Loveseat, which folded down flat into a sleeper. At first, I was not enthused at the prospect of sleeping on what looked like a few couch cushions, but my apartment was not an option at the time, because I still had a roommate. So I just accepted that I would be getting poor sleep for the next seven nights. I was shocked that when I folded down the sides of the couch and nestled in for the night with a throw blanket and spare pillow that it felt like a high-quality firm mattress.

I slept very well on this loveseat, and I am a restless sleeper who struggles to drift off on the best of nights. Prior instances of me sleeping on couches and sleeper sofas have never gone well — this is the only time in my life where I’ve endorsed a sleeper sofa.

This linen loveseat fits two people sitting and even has a side pocket for magazines (which my friend kept stuffed with New Yorker issues). It’s good for lounging and its mid-century modern design makes it a stylish, budget-friendly pick. Even when it isn’t on sale, it’s a good price at $340. That’s a cheap loveseat to begin with — not counting that you can convert it into a sleeper.

One of the best parts about this loveseat is that it was never an ordeal to transform it into a sleeper. The sides were easy to fold down and then it was ready. The back of the loveseat, which is flat, never got in my way at night when I was readjusting my sleeping.

If you want an easy way to sneak an extra place for guests to sleep in your space, this is my top recommendation. And right now, it’s on sale for only $228!
