If you’re into seasonal home decor and budget-friendly finds, I challenge you to name a happier place than the aisles at HomeGoods. So when I heard the retailer was taking over a vacation rental in upstate New York, decking it out from top to bottom in HomeGoods finds, and allowing consumers to book the space for affordable stays — $29.99 a night, in fact — it sounded like, well, a dream. That’s exactly the idea behind the brand’s the House of HomeGoods, which was officially launched today, and I got an early look to tease some of the smart decorating ideas and items those lucky enough to snag a booking will see upon their arrival.

First though, let’s take a deeper dive into the logistics of booking the your very own HomeGoods getaway, because it’s a very first come, first served situation. Beginning today through Saturday, October 15, guest bookings will release daily at HomeGoods’ dedicated House of HomeGoods page. Today’s reservation drop has passed, but on October 13, 14, and 15, you can shoot your shot at 12:00 p.m. ET / 9:00 a.m. on each of those days.
The home (which you can see the backyard of above) is available the last two weekends of October and the two first weekends of November, and you can round up some friends and family to fill out the two bedrooms in the picturesque Hudson Valley. Here’s the really fun part: Each of those weekends will have a different decor theme (Find Creativity, Find Festivity, Find Charm, and Find Adventure), and guests can pack-up some of their favorite pieces to take home with them.
Now, onto those decorating tips! If you’ve ever struggled to see the potential of items while shopping, when everything is sort of just stacked on shelves, then this kind of themed installation is for you. Each of the rooms in the “Find Creativity” setup I saw riffed on a single color of the rainbow — a purple mudroom, blue living room, yellow and pink bedrooms, a green bathroom, a brown studio space and so on — which definitely speaks to the trend of monochromatic home decor. As for specific ideas though, HomeGoods delivered there, too. These are the ones that struck me as fitting with the “Find Creativity” theme.
Display a smaller rug as a wall hanging.
Who says you have to stick to just paintings and prints to decorate your walls? A small rag rug makes for a striking way to fill a bare spot on a budget. Look for one that works with your wall color, just as this multicolored pulls out the purple shade of the mudroom’s walls.
Store your prettiest art and crafting supplies in glass hurricanes.
Let your colorful wares double as decor. Corral spools of thread, markers, and watercolor palettes in glass vases and hurricanes and arrange them on a desk. If you choose oversized silhouettes for your vessels, you can arrange them right on the floor!
Dress up a table runner with some added dimension.
The layered look is in, even when it comes to tablescaping. Jazz up a plain table runner with felt garlands or wooden strands of beads. You can always repurpose these items later by hanging them across windows and doorways or along walls. Add a trendy bust to the mix, too, along with vases and candle holders.
Fancy up a faux plant with a basket base.
The easiest-ever way to jazz up a fake plant is with a nicer pot or planter. Big or small, regular shaped or designed to look like a whimsical animal (as shown in this bedroom setup), a basket will make even a faux plant look special.
