Nate Berkus is not one for trends. In fact, the fan-favorite designer often puts his own spin on classic design elements that will never go out of fashion. From distinctive marble to checkered floors, Berkus is a fan of bold, timeless styles and his newly-renovated New York City home — which he shares with husband Jeremiah Brent and their two children — showcases this perfectly.

In a recent Instagram post, Berkus shared how a vintage piece of outdoor furniture has become a staple piece in the foyer of the home. The table took pride of place in the foyer of his California home, and now sits in the entryway of the NYC apartment.
Proving that interior design has no boundaries, he wrote: “As you know I’m not a fan of trends — I much prefer investing in pieces that I can keep for years. This 18th century stone table was originally intended for the outdoors, but there are no rules that say you can’t use outdoor furniture inside. The juxtaposition of the old, worn stone with the new, fresh interior is what I love so much about what this piece (plus, it’s indestructible).”
In the clip, Berkus goes on to explain that he loves using outdoors furniture inside, particularly old, stone, because “you cannot wreck it.”
“We literally hurl things on top of this table,” he says.
Adding a bunch of personality to the space, Berkus adds that the table gives the space contrast and balance.
“The character that this piece has, the rusticity, the roughness, compared to the beautiful floor in the room, and the mouldings and all of that… that balance is exactly what’s interesting to me about design.”
Just like bringing the table back, Berkus’ and Brent’s revamp of their NYC apartment has incorporated many of the elements from their West Coast home. In the newly-renovated kitchen, which is a world away from the previous black design, brings in plenty of the ribbed marble the couple love (and was seen throughout their Los Angeles kitchen).
