Based on real historical events, “The Empress” follows the rebellious young Elisabeth “Sissi” von Wittelsbach (Devrim Lingnau), Bavarian princess who finds herself up against a manner of power struggles and court intrigue when she becomes the empress of Austria in the 1800s.

Several lavish locations stand in for 19th century Europe in the Netflix series, including Weissenstein Palace, a grand building that serves as Sisi’s principal royal residence. Located in Pommersfelden, Bavaria, the palace is considered to be one of Germany’s greatest Baroque buildings — and now, thanks to Airbnb, it’s opening its doors to visitors.

For two nights in June 2023, lucky emperors and empresses will get the chance to stay in one of the palace’s private suites, which will soon be available on Airbnb. It joins the vacation rental’s growing “historical homes” category, which highlights over 4,000 stays around the globe.

“Empress Elizabeth, fondly nicknamed Sisi, is an all-time favorite historical figure: a sportswoman, fashion icon, traveler, poet and tragic heroine who fell to an assassin’s blade,” the Airbnb’s host, Countess Benedicta Schönborn-Wiesentheid, said in a press release. “As she was born in Bavaria, it’s both exciting and fitting to bring this legendary woman home and share a little glimpse into her world.”

During their stay, guests will be given an exclusive tour of the house, visiting parts of the building that are normally closed off to the general public — including the ornate “Shell Room,” where a Sisi-inspired breakfast and dinner will be served.
In honor of what would’ve been the monarch’s 185th birthday, guests can request this stay starting Wednesday, November 2, at 7 p.m. CET. The palace suite can be booked at airbnb.com/theempress. Two individual bookings are available on June 19 and June 23, 2023, and each booking is suitable for two visitors.
